Geographic Series Commentary
"The pieces in this series reflect an affection toward movement within urban
geography. For example, there could be cars, trucks, and pedestrians all
crossing a bridge at once in two directions at various speeds. Below the
bridge the river is moving downstream and a barge upstream. A train powers
along it's path under the bridge. To capture this scene in a still photograph
will certainly display the geography well, but not the movement. I feel that
movement is naturally inherent in the medium of weaving.
The relationship between each string in it's up-down, over-under maneuvers
echo the movements in a given geography-scape. This will always be true
because everything moves over-top of the earth on it's journey. A bridge is
not necessary in most cases, but it is the bridge, and the bridges over
bridges, and especially the trains that add excitement and positive energy to
a given location.
I have used strings, ropes, and yarns woven together to harness such movement
and excitement. Through varying fiber texture, color and size I can
interpret the feel of different elements within our urban moving world. And
to capture this energy and motion using fibers stretched over a frame for me
is thrilling." - Stevo
